About Me

Welcome to Anne Arundel County Public Schools

My name is Tareque Farruk, and I'm running for the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education in District 5. My family and I moved to Cape St. Claire several years ago, embracing the vibrant community here. With my wife, Dr. Irum Tahir, and our two sons, Adam and Gabriel, who attend Maryland's public schools, we've made this area our forever home.

Respecting all communities:

As your representative on the Board of Education, I am dedicated to strengthening policies that foster an inclusive environment embracing all cultures. Despite AACPS's efforts to promote inclusivity, many parents, students, and community members still feel marginalized and unheard. It is essential for the Board to embrace diversity, honor all communities, and respect differences, even when there is disagreement or lack of understanding. This begins with Board members actively listening to and respecting the voices of their constituents, ensuring that all students and parents, even those who may not be vocal advocates, are heard and represented. The Board of Education should be open to evaluating its positions based on the concerns expressed by the communities it serves. As a responsive Board member, I will include that input into policy and budget discussions and positions thereby promoting a more inclusive and responsive educational system.

Returning the focus to Academics:

The Focus of AACPS has incrementally moved away from what its core mission should be: academics. Academics should be the first and core focus of any school system. Governance should be with the understanding that the outcome is an educated student.
The students of AACPS experienced learning losses during Covid lockdowns and virtual learning as well as an overall reduction in student achievement. I believe every child should be encouraged to reach their full potential as students and set them up for success whether that is in the vocational or trade programs, workforce, or college.

Respect in the Classroom:

A culture of respect should be woven into AACPS starting in the classroom. I have heard from teachers and students concerns about disruptive and violent behavior in our schools.
As a member of the Board, I am committed to crafting a focused policy agenda that supports classrooms free from disciplinary disruptions. Implementing policies that emphasize student accountability will pave the way for future success by fostering an environment focused on learning and mutual respect for all teachers and students.
